Griezmann double gives France comeback win over Germany

Griezmann double gives France comeback win over Germany

World champions France fought back from a goal down to edge Germany 2-1 with a double from Antoine Griezmann in their Nations Cup match at the Stade de France on Tuesday.

The 27-year-old forward cancelled out Toni Kroos’ first half penalty with a fine header just past the hour and then scored with a spot-kick himself late in the game to kill off the visitors’ hopes of reaching the semi-finals.

The French found themselves on the backfoot in the first half but did not lose confidence even when the Germans came close to a second goal.

“This is the difference between a team with a lot of confidence and a team like Germany which lacks some confidence and is maybe not as efficient,” France coach Didier Deschamps told reporters.

“There is nothing better for my team, my players, than this. The best vitamin is victory and tonight we had a difficult game and won against a difficult team.”

France top the League A Group 1 standings with seven points from three games above the Netherlands on three from two and Germany with one.

The Germans, with five changes to the team that lost 3-0 away to the Netherlands on Saturday, had their share of chances and overall looked sharper despite their sixth defeat of 2018.

Leroy Sane and Serge Gnabry added much needed speed to Germany’s game and the overall performance offered coach Joachim Loew some respite after recent setbacks.

“We should not be disappointed tonight after such a performance,” said Loew, who has been under pressure since his side’s World Cup flop in June.

“We were on the same level with the world champions and we should have scored a second goal in the first half. But the French have a lot of quality and scored two goals from just a handful of chances.”

After crashing out at the group stage in the World Cup in Russia, Germany, world champions in 2014, are still looking for their first victory in UEFA’s the Nations League competition.

Begusarai: The Communist Party of India (CPI) has strongly condemned the “brutal attack” on former Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU) president Kanhaiya Kumar’s convoy at Begusarai district of Bihar, and alleged that it was orchestrated by the activists of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Yuva Morcha and Bajrang Dal.

“The National Secretariat of Communist Party of India severely condemns the brutal attack on Kanhaiya Kumar at Bachwada sub-division of Begusarai district of Bihar by the goons of BJP Yuva Morcha and Bajrang Dal,” a statement issued by the CPI read.

Narrating the incident, the CPI said that Kumar was returning after a political campaign to motivate people to join the party’s proposed massive rally on 25 October at Patna when the incident took place.

“He was returning after a political campaign to motivate people to join CPI proposed massive rally on 25 October at Patna. More than 50 goons attacked the convoy with weapons (and) beat colleagues of Kanhaiya, damaged several vehicles. Kanhaiya is safe but several comrades who resisted are injured,” the statement read.

The CPI further claimed that the attack on Kumar was to kill him, adding, “It is a shame on the part of the ruling clan to carry such inhuman attacks on popular student leader like Kanhaiya Kumar.”

The party has also demanded the immediate arrest of the perpetrators.

“The CPI demands immediate arrest of the culprits and severe punishment. The attack reflects the poor law and order situation in Bihar. CPI will not be afraid of these attacks of Hindutva communal forces and will fight back,” it concluded.

Former JNU student leader Umar Khalid  also tweeted claiming solidarity with Kumar.

The reaction from the party came after few people were injured and several vehicles were vandalised when Kumar’s convoy was attacked near Dahia village on Tuesday.

Sara Ali Khan, Kangana Ranaut or Deepika Padukone, pick your favourite airport look

Tuesday in planet Bollywood was dominated by celebrations — 20 years of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Hema Malini’s 70th birthday. A huge number of big stars — Shah Rukh Khan, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Kajol, Rani Mukherji, Janhvi Kapoor — made it to Karan Johar’s big bash. Similarly, Hema Malini’s birthday party saw many yesteryear stars such as Rekha, Jeetendra and Sanjay Khan.

Meanwhile, there were other stars who were painting the town red and several were spotted at the airport — Deepika Padukone, Jacqueline Fernandez, Kangana Ranaut, Ranveer Singh and Sara Ali Khan.

Some were seen at promotional events — Aishwarya Rai Bachchan looked as beautiful as ever at a breast cancer awareness event while Neha Dhupia and Soha Ali Khan were at a product launch.

Soha’s daughter, Inaaya was spotted, but what was sweet was her interaction with an elderly lady. That’s two different generations having an exchange of ideas in their own way.

Another mother-daughter duo — Kajol and daughter Nysa — were spotted at lunch in Bandra.

Pakistan looks to buy Chinese missile ‘better than’ Indo-Russian BrahMos: Report

Pakistan looks to buy Chinese missile ‘better than’ Indo-Russian BrahMos: Report

Pakistan is a potential buyer of a new supersonic missile tested in China, which is said to be better than the similar BrahMos rocket system developed by India and Russia, the state media has reported.

According to the report, the Chinese HD-1 supersonic missile will face little competition in the international market.

Islamabad could opt for it because of the weapon system’s potential to penetrate “anti-missile” defence platforms, the report said.

Developed by the south China-based Guangdong Hongda Blasting Company, the “HD-1 is a comprehensive weapon system consisting of missile, launch, command and control, target indication and comprehensive support systems”, the tabloid Global Times quoted a company statement as saying.

The missile platform can be “…adapted to aircraft and ships as well as the basic ground-based vehicle version”.

It was tested earlier this week at a secret facility in northern China.

“The HD-1’s advanced solid fuel ramjet needs less fuel than its competitors, rendering the lighter missile able to fly faster and farther,” Wei Dongxu, a Beijing-based military analyst, was quoted in the report as saying.

The company intends to sign deals and mass-produce the HD-1 for export after government approval.

“Pakistan and Middle Eastern countries are likely to show interest given the weapon’s potential to break anti-missile systems at supersonic speeds,” Wei said.

“The BrahMos missile is a more expensive, less useful supersonic cruise missile developed by India and Russia,” Wei said.

Dubbed as a “carrier killer”, BrahMos is considered the fastest supersonic missile system in the world.

The report didn’t specify the range of the HD-1 missile; the Indo-Russian missile has a range of about 300 km.

India’s Hindustan Aeronautics Limited handed over the first Su-30 MKI fighter aircraft modified for the BrahMos missile to the Indian Air Force earlier this year.

The Indian Army and Indian Navy — for both ships and submarine — have already inducted the missile.

Several countries including Vietnam is said to be in talks to buy the BrahMos system, even as Beijing is locked in a maritime dispute in the South China Sea with Hanoi.

Neither Wei nor the GT report specified the parameters under which the BrahMos was “less useful” than the HD-1 to potential buyers of the two systems.

One reason — not military but strategic — could be that the BrahMos system as per policy is likely be sold only to allies.

At the Singapore Airshow this February, a BrahMos spokesperson told CNBC that discussions were underway “with a number of countries,” adding that the company would only sell to “responsible” nations friendly with both New Delhi and Moscow.

The GT article indicated that no such clause will be attached to the sale of the HD-1 missile system when it is ready.

Sensex succumbs to profit-booking, tanks 383 points

Sensex succumbs to profit-booking, tanks 383 points

MUMBAI: Surrendering early gains completely, the benchmark sensex on Wednesday fell 383 points to end below the 35,000-mark in highly volatile trade, breaking three sessions of gains as investors booked profits amid caution ahead of Reliance Industries’ second quarter earnings.

The flagship index swung nearly 880 points both ways on alternate bouts of buying and selling during the session.

Sentiments were also hurt by liquidity concerns that dragged down non-banking financial stocks.

Overall sentiment was cautious as investors were on a wait-and-watch mode ahead of financial results from Reliance Industries, to be released later in the day, brokers said.

After a gap up opening at 35,543.38 points, the sensex advanced to hit a high of 35,605.43 points in early trade on the back of better-than-expected Q2 earnings posted by tech major Infosys on Tuesday.

However, emergence of selling by investors across-the-board, mostly of a profit-booking nature, gave up session’s gain to hit a low of 34,727.16 in late afternoon trade, before settling 382.90 points, or 1.09 per cent, down at 34,779.58.

The index had risen nearly 1,161 points in the past three sessions on the back of unabated buying by domestic institutional investors (DIIs) and rebound in global equity markets.

The broader NSE Nifty too dived by 131.70 points, or 1.24 per cent, to close at 10,453.05. Intra-day, it reclaimed the 10,700-mark to scale a high of 10,710.15 and a low of 10,436.45.

In the forex market, the rupee after showing strength in early session to quote at 73.37, was quoting 13 paise down at 73.61 against the dollar (intra-day) too had its shadow on equities.

Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) sold shares worth Rs 1,165.63 crore, while domestic institutional investors bought shares to the tune of Rs 1,059.44 crore on Tuesday, as per provisional data available on the BSE.

Stock exchanges will remain closed tomorrow on account of “Dussehra”.

Nilackal: Tension prevailed Wednesday morning in Kerala’s Nilakkal, the main gateway to Sabarimala, after the police used force to disperse devotees opposing the entry of girls and women of menstrual age into the hill shrine.

Acting tough, the police, deployed in large numbers in Nilakkal, some 20 kms away from the Sabarimala hilltop, also removed a makeshift shelter erected by a protesting group Sabarimala Achara Samrakshana Samiti. The protesting group of devotees had been staging a sit-in chanting Ayyappa mantra in the shelter in protest against the Supreme Court order permitting women of all age groups to enter the shrine.

The protesting people, who were less in numbers, ran from the spot when the police initiated action in the early hours on Wednesday when they tried to block the buses from the key entry point to the temple. Hours ahead of opening of the hill shrine for the monthly prayer, the police said they would not let anyone to block the movement of the people.

Taking the full control of Nilakkal, Police also warned against those who create hurdles in the ways of pilgrims to the hill shrine. The police took strong action against the protesters after some of them checked the vehicles heading to Pamba and prevented the women in the age group of 10 and 50 from entering the hill shrine.

A couple from Tamil Nadu, aged 45 and 40, on their way to Pamba, were forced to get down from the KSRTC bus Monday night allegedly by some activists of the Sabarimala Achara Samrakshana Samiti. Although the couple had said that they would go only up to Pamba and not climb Sabarimala, the activists prevented them.
The police later took them to safety. Some activists of the Sabarimala Achara Samrakshana Samiti, who had stayed back at Nilakkal, also allegedly prevented the media persons from carrying out their professional duty.

Crew of various TV news channels were asked to leave the place. They could return the spot after more policemen were deployed in the area. Around 500 police personnel, including women, have been deployed in Nilakkal to ensure a safe passage to the pilgrims to the Lord Ayyappa temple. Meanwhile, another group of devotees said they would stage a Gandhian style peaceful protest in Pamba.

The shrine located on the mountain ranges of the ecologically fragile Western Ghats opens later in the evening for the first time after the recent Supreme Court.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has said no one would be allowed to block devotees from proceeding to Sabarimala. Groups of women devotees including senior citizens, clad in traditional sarees, had stopped each and every vehicle at Nilakkal on Tuesday.

Besides private vehicles, devotees even stopped and inspected Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) buses and asked young women to get out of them Tuesday. Very few police personnel were present when the incidents happened. Protesting women had said no women belonging to the banned age group of 10-50 will be allowed to travel further from Nilakkal and offer worship at the shrine. The temple would be closed on October 22 after the five-day monthly prayer during the Malayalam month of Thulam.
